The terms of our training agreements and SwissBreathwork’s ethics for practitioners can be found above.
SwissBreathwork ethical standards
- Adherence to an ethical standard of practice is a defining element of any profession. A code of ethics provides clarity and security to the public and to practitioners about the purpose of their relationship and the boundaries within which they operate. Subscribing to a standard code of practice communicates to the general public that breathing is a valid, accessible and professional tool for healing and growth.
- All the trainers and practitioners who are subscribers or members listed on this website have signed a commitment to abide by these ethics. They have also committed to a process of responsible action when a breach of ethics is identified. The process recommended by SwissBreathwork is set out below.
- The SwissBreathwork Board Ethics Committee is available to advise and assist in the event of a perceived breach of ethics by a breathing professional.
- Customer suitability.
- a) Establish a client’s ability to use and integrate the results of a breathing session.
- b) To not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnic origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age or appearance.
- Customer contracts.
- a) Draw up clear contracts with clients regarding the number and duration of sessions and financial terms.
- b) Establish prior agreement with the client for the use of techniques other than breathing during a session, for example, touch.
- c) Practise my breathing skills primarily for the benefit of the client.
- d) Maintaining the confidentiality of customer information and the security of recordings of customer session content.
- Practitioner competence
- a) Practice in my area of professional competence, training and expertise, make this clear to potential clients and do not make claims for my service that cannot be justified.
- b) To continue to develop personally, practising the technique I offer to others while nurturing the passion and respect for my vocation, and maintaining a healthy balance in my work and personal car
- c) Seek supervision and consultation where appropriate.
- Practitioner/client relationship
- a)Establish and maintain healthy, appropriate and professional boundaries, respecting the rights and dignity of those I serve.
- b) Refrain from using my influence to exploit or exercise inappropriate power over my customers.
- c) Refrain from using my breathing practice to promote my personal religious beliefs.
- d) Refrain from any form of sexual behaviour or harassment with customers, even when the customer initiates or invites such behaviour.
- e) Provide customers with information on complementary resources, where appropriate.
- f) Referring customers to the appropriate resources when they present problems beyond my field of training.
- Interrelationships between practitioners
- a) Maintain and nurture healthy relationships with other respiratory workers.
- b) Provide constructive feedback to other Alliance practitioners who I feel have not followed one or more of the ethical principles. If this does not sufficiently resolve the problem, consult the most appropriate professional and/or civil authorities in my area for the protection of the clients concerned.
SWISSBREATHWORK process for dealing with ethical breaches
An important goal of the SwissBreathwork Certified Practitioner Ethics and Principles is to provide an informative, life-enhancing and healing framework for practitioner-client relationships. While it is impossible to specifically address every situation or give exhaustive guidelines for all behaviours, these ethics and principles are intended to guide towards the highest ideals.
In the process of making decisions about professional conduct, SwissBreathwork practitioners must be mindful of SwissBreathwork’s ethics and principles, in addition to the laws and regulations applicable in Switzerland or the specific professional associations with which they are affiliated. Where SwissBreathwork standards are higher than those required by law, practitioners must adhere to the highest SwissBreathwork standard.
Recognising the humanity of all practitioners, there may be times when a practitioner breaches an ethic or principle, knowingly or unknowingly. The practitioner may become aware of the breach themselves or may be made aware of the breach by a client or another practitioner.
The guidelines put forward by SwissBreathwork encourage restorative and corrective measures, rather than punitive or regulatory measures, to promote good health and benefits for all concerned. We suggest that when practitioners use this process, they undertake it as an opportunity to heal, learn, evolve and benefit the well-being of all involved.
The process has five possible stages, the paradigm being to move on to the next stage only if healing and restoration cannot take place in the previous stage.
